I’ve become very aware of the hurried feel of today’s lifestyle and how many tout the benefits of mindfulness to combat this frantic pace. But while this practice of slowing down and being aware of your surroundings may bring some calm, I’ve found that taking mindfulness to a spiritual level is a much more powerful way of bringing calm and peace to life. This spiritual level is a clarity of thought and brings instead an awareness of the unbroken relation each of us has with the Divine. This awareness can be felt as a pinpoint of light, a profound peace, an enfolding love, a comforting message that is from God.
Some have found that this kind of awareness, which is centered on the spiritual rather than the physical, is a more empowering and lasting way of thinking. Spiritual clarity has helped me to quiet thought and obtain a sense of balance – without withdrawing from present activity. Once I was to give a major talk to a statewide audience. I arrived late when throbbing head pain threatened my ability to give the talk. I realized this was precipitated by tension, and I turned to the Divine for peace. Quickly the pain left and I delivered the talk without difficulty.
In a world where the distractions and stress are 24/7, it is especially heartening that many are finding a sense of balance in their lives through prayerful practices. This ability to reach out to God and find clarity through a spiritual connection is available today and was also how Jesus was able to share his healing message with the world. Jesus periodically needed to remove himself from daily distractions in order to confidently go forward in his calling with this sense of balance. Mary Baker Eddy, the author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, investigated the kind of spiritual connection that would nurture one’s spiritual self and in turn allow for a harmonious expression of life: “Become conscious for a single moment that [God] and intelligence are purely spiritual…and the body will then utter no complaints.”
Embracing a spiritual sense of God’s love allows for a richer life experience full of confidence, harmony, compassion, patience, and peace.
